A high school thesis about a microfinance project in Rufunsa, Zambia by two young men from Switzerland, Benjamin Gantner and his friend, working with Maurice Kraemer (who took early retirement in Switzerland) led to the formation of UMINO Community Loan Services.

The name UMINO is an acronym of a Zambia phrase “UMoyo wabwINO” which means “A Better life”.

UMINO Community Loan Services is a non – governmental Organization (NGO) registered in July 2017 as a company limited by guarantee that provides financial services to rural parts of Zambia. UMINO targets rural households with business and farm loan products. Currently, UMINO is operated using a Money Lenders’ license, but in 2021/2022, UMINO will be registering as a Microfinance Institution regulated by the Bank of Zambia.

UMINO is a subsidiary of the Furrer Foundation (FUFO) that is also a registered Non-governmental Organization (NGO), As part of its growth strategy, UMINO is providing loans to farmers as well as Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Eastern part of Zambia.

To improve the living standards of the local, rural people by providing fair, sustainable and professional microfinance services.

To grant loans to farmers or small businesses in rural areas of Zambia to start new businesses or extend existing operations.
